Installation Guide

Overview
  • Mounting Configuration: Door hinges attach to the door edge and the corresponding door frame. The specific placement and technique depend on the hinge style.
What You Will Need
  • Screwdriver (Phillips or flathead)
  • Drill with assorted bits
  • Chisel (for mortising)
  • Screws
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Level or square
  • Hammer and mallet
A. Mortise Hinges

Step 1: Mark the Hinge Positions

Measure and mark locations on the door edge. Standard placement:

  • Top hinge: 5–7 inches from the top of the door
  • Bottom hinge: 10–12 inches from the bottom
  • Third hinge (if used): centered between the top and bottom positions

Step 2: Cut the Mortise Recesses

Trace the hinge outline on the door edge and frame. Chisel shallow recesses so each hinge leaf sits flush with the surrounding surface.

Step 3: Pre-Drill the Screw Holes

Place the hinge into the mortise, mark the screw locations, and drill pilot holes.

Step 4: Attach the Hinges

Screw one leaf of each hinge to the door edge. Position the door in the frame and fasten the other leaf to the jamb.

Step 5: Test the Swing

Open and close the door to confirm smooth, unobstructed movement. Adjust screws if needed.

B. Concealed Hinges

Step 1: Mark and Cut the Recess

Mark the hinge positions on both the door edge and frame. Use a router or chisel to cut recesses deep enough to house the concealed hinge body.

Step 2: Position and Pre-Drill

Insert the hinge body into the recess, align it flush with the surface, and mark the screw holes. Drill pilot holes.

Step 3: Fasten the Hinges

Secure the hinge body into both the door and the frame using the provided screws. Confirm the hinge is fully seated for correct alignment.

Step 4: Fine-Tune the Alignment

Most concealed hinges have built-in adjustment screws. Use them to dial in the vertical and horizontal alignment.

Step 5: Test the Operation

Open and close the door through its full range to verify smooth, quiet movement without rubbing or binding.

Helpful Reminders
  • Measure and mark all hinge positions carefully before cutting or drilling.
  • Proper mortising ensures hinges sit flush and the door closes cleanly.
  • Use a level to verify vertical alignment.
  • Heavy doors benefit from three hinges for stable support.
  • Tighten screws periodically to maintain long-term performance.
